What Are Common Signs of a Water Leak?
While the sources of some water leaks are clear-cut, there are some situations where a leak's source is less obvious. When a leak goes undetected or unaddressed, it can result in serious water damage to your home. As soon as you notice an indication of a water leak, you'll want to call in an experienced plumber who can quickly fix the issue. Here are six common indications of a water leak.
Water Bill Spikes
Assuming you're continuing to follow the same routine, your water bill should remain quite consistent. However, if your water bill rises by more than $20, then you'll want to start considering the possibility that water is leaking in your home.
Sound of Running Water
A classic sign of a water leak is that you can hear the sound of running water while all of your faucets are turned off. When this occurs, you can cross-check with your water meter to help you figure out if water is running when it shouldn't be.
Mold/Mildew
If mold or mildew is showing up on a wall, it could mean that water is leaking from a pipe inside that wall. Because bathrooms tend to be damp, mildew on a bathroom wall isn't automatically a sign of a water leak. But if mold/mildew is growing in other areas of the home, then there's reason to be concerned about a leaking pipe.
Musty Smell
A leaking pipe will often lead to a musty stench that precedes the appearance of mold or mildew.
Stained Wall
An undetected leak in your wall might first make itself known in the form of an unsightly stain on the wall.
Damp Floors
If your floor suddenly feels damp and you know that nothing was spilled, then there's definitely reason to be concerned. At this point, you'll want to have an experienced plumber come over and conduct an inspection. By delaying, you could end up with much more serious property damage. And there could even be a health hazard if there is toxic matter leaking.
